We the undersigned petition Westminster City Council to install acoustic traffic cameras to reduce noisy vehicles. More details
Petition update from the council, 11 June 2021Dear Mr Hanbury,
Thank you for your recent petition regarding traffic cameras being used to reduce noisy vehicles. Westminster City Council (WCC) are aware of the nuisance and negative impact that loud traffic can cause our communities. We are currently in the process of obtaining community impact evidence relating to loud and dangerous driving in certain locations. Once all of the evidence has been reviewed by our Legal Services team, we will hopefully be in a position to submit a draft Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) application for consultation across Westminster. The PSPO will be submitted to cover specific areas in Westminster where it has been evidenced that there have been persistent issues in the locality. I will arrange for you to be sent a copy of the consultation once it has been published. This will be similar to the PSPO in RBKC and will allow us to better manage the issue of dangerous and nuisance driving in our Borough.
In conjunction with this, WCC are also looking to install two acoustic cameras in the worst affected areas, both of which have seen vehicles coming into the areas late at night and performing stunts and driving on pavements. We will be using this to gather further evidence to support the PSPO and to support Police prosecutions for driving offences. As vehicle noise is not a statutory nuisance, WCC have no powers to enforce this issue. The acoustic cameras will be used alongside a PSPO to manage these issues, following a similar process to RBKC.
We hope the measures we are taking will have a positive impact on our communities most affected.
