Petition update from the council, 27 April 2012

I am writing in connection with the two e-petitions you have posted on the City of Westminster website on 14th March in connection with Crossrail’s impact on Soho Square parking and traffic.

With regard to easing the traffic flow in Soho by changing the traffic arrangements on Soho Street northbound to come in Rathbone Place, this is being addressed through a study that has been prepared by the developers of the Crossrail Station sites at Charing Cross Road and Oxford Street in recognition of the significant pressure Crossrail, and other utility works, have placed on the parking facilities and traffic movements in and around Soho Square. A consultation is shortly to commence in identifying alternative parking spaces that have been displaced by various traffic diversion works. You will be included in the consultation process as a local resident and your comments considered accordingly.

In regards to ensuring minicabs do not use resident parking bays at night please note that the City Council are not able to enforce resident parking bays by CCTV as we cannot confirm whether vehicles have a valid parking permit. If this is happening at specific locations the City Council can request NSL to carry out special enforcement for a set period, although it is unclear from your petition exactly where this activity is being observed. Please contact the Customer Service team 020 7823 4567 (08:00 - 18:30) or use our contact form to report any further incidents

This letter will be forwarded to the Cabinet Member for Business, Cabinet Member for City Management and Transport, Cabinet Member for the Built Environment, and West End ward members for their information so they are aware of the issues you have raised in the petition. The response will be copied to CRL for their reference.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Rosemarie MacQueen
Strategic Director Built Environment

More details from petition creator

The works have led to traffic disturbances in the E part of Soho, by closure of the N end of Dean St, Grt Chapel St, and part of Soho Square. The result is that access to the area from N or W, previously possible via Dean St or Wardour-Hollen-Fareham St, is now only possible from the S(which means going thru Piccadilly) or E (coming from Holborn down Shatesbury). Any attempt to come from the W (e.g. Marlborough) is being spat back out N by Wardour, and there is no N option anymore. This is very inconvenient, as both remaining options can lead to unnecessary traffic delays while circling around Soho. We suggest changing direction on Soho St, so that one can come in from Rathbone Pl. We think the benefits would far outweigh any loss of flow, as exit towards the north is easily handled by Wardour or Charing Cross. We also think that this is unlikely to provide overflow to Soho.
