Petition update from the council, 06 February 2012
As the parking policies agreed by Cabinet on the 1st August 2011 do not command sufficient public support in view of their potential economic impact, in particular upon the night-time economy, the Cabinet met on the 30th January 2012 to consider the matter and following discussion:
Westminster Strategic Parking Policy Review: Agreed to withdraw the following parking policies:
(i)the extension of parking controls on weekday and Saturday evenings in Zones E and G.
(ii)the introduction of parking controls on Sundays in Zones E, F3, F6 and G.
(iii)the introduction of an increased charge for second residents’ parking permits.
(iv)improved loading and waiting provision in Zones E, F and G through the designation of more “shared use” loading bays.
Also agreed in principle to the establishment of an independent commission as set out in Section 6 of the report to understand how the interests of the wider economy may or may not be affected before any significant future proposals are brought forward.

More details from petition creator
Westminster Council has been ordered by the High Court not to introduce evening and Sunday parking charges in the West End on 9th January and to wait until the Judicial Review has been heard in March. The Council has since said that the charges will not be brought in until after the 2012 Olympics are over. But this is not good enough as introducing the charges in September 2012 simply delays the damage to the West End economy and to over 5,000 jobs
