Petition update from the council, 26 January 2012

Set out below is a response to the petition from the Strategic Director, City Management.

Dear Mr Hamilton,

‘Save D Division Police Stations’ petition

I refer to your recent petition in respect of Paddington Police Station.

We at the council work closely with the police and recognise the vital service they provide to this City. I have spoken to the Borough Commander for Westminster, Commander Simon Bray, who has confirmed that the Metropolitan Police Service is currently reviewing the whole of its estate to ensure they are making best use of it and identifying efficiency savings that can help protect their operational capability. This is an ongoing process.

At this time we can confirm that there are no plans to close Paddington Green police station nor to withdraw the police response capability that operates from it.

The Metropolitan Police Service will be carrying out a review of their operational structures, including operating bases, after the Olympics. If changes are proposed at that time, they will be the subject of further consultation. The City Council will ensure that we are actively involved in that process and indeed that our communities are appropriately consulted.

Thank you for your interest in your local police service and please rest assured that your comments have been noted by the relevant parties.

Yours sincerely

Leith Penny
Strategic Director of City Management

More details from petition creator

The Met Police have plans to close all four stations in Westminster North - 'D' Division (Paddington Green, Harrow Road, Marylebone & St. John's Wood), and all response teams are to be moved to Belgravia by January 2012. This will seriously impact the response times of officers dealing with calls in Westminster North. On top of this, some of our local sergeants have already lost their jobs. Please sign this petition to keep our local stations open. We need them.
