We the undersigned petition Westminster City Council to remove the bench positioned at the end of Hatherley Street. More details
Petition update from the council, 18 August 2017Dear Mr Cole
Re: Response to Petition – Bench on Hatherley Street
I am writing to you in response to the petition received titled “Bench of Hatherley Street”. I would like to thank you for your time in bringing this concern to our attention and the efforts for collecting 35 signatures from residents of 56 Vincent Square.
I appreciate the issues associated with the bench located on Hatherley Street junction with Vauxhall Bridge Road can have a major impact on local residents and in particular those who reside in 56 Vincent Square. I have also reviewed the use and necessity of the damaged bench outside Westminster Kingsway College for suitability of a replacement. After consultation with Councillor Chalkley and Councillor Harvey, it has been decided for both benches to be removed from their current location and the pavement to be permanently reinstated.
As mentioned in your petition, benches can attract unwanted anti-social behaviours and the City Council will remove street furniture that serves no community purpose and will continue to commit on improving street scene. It was bought to our attention the damaged bench in
Vincent Square serves no purpose other than providing an area for students to smoke and generate litter.
I hope you, along with the residents of 56 Vincent Square are satisfied with the outcome of this petition; the actions have been programmed with our service provider FM Conway to remove the benches and permanently reinstate the pavement over the next few weeks.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any queries regarding this matter.

Bench on Hatherley Street.
I am writing to you on behalf of a number of residents in flats in 56 Vincent Square, the site of the old children's hospital now converted to a residential block.
Our concern is that by siting a bench at the Vauxhall Bridge Road end of Hatherley Street it acts as a meeting point for street dwellers, drinkers and those prone to unruly behaviour. There have a number of examples of excessive noise and residents being verbally abused as they pass which is an unpleasant experience and of real concern to residents in our block which faces Hatherley Street. With the summer approaching this situation is likely to deteriorate further.
Residents from more than 30 flats have signed the enclosed petition which asks for the bench to be re-sited away from the block of flats.
A neat solution presented itself at a recent meeting of the Vincent Square Residents Association when residents pointed out that a bench or benches outside the college in the square is broken and asked for it to be replaced. Our suggestion is that the bench in Hatherley Street be moved across the square to replace a broken one outside the college.
Is this something you could arrange for us please?
