Petition update from the council, 27 November 2017

Dear Dr Nora Brennan

Re: Response to Petition - Resettlement of 50 Syrian refugees in the borough of Westminster

I am writing to you in response to your petition ‘use government funding from the Vulnerable Person Resettlement Scheme to settle 50 Syrian refugees in the borough of Westminster’ submitted to the Council. The petition closed in April 2017 with a total of 79 signatures.

Please accept our very sincere apologies for the considerable delay in responding to you on this issue, this was due to administrative oversight whilst our service was being restructured.

As outlined in your submission, central government created the Vulnerable Person Resettlement Scheme (VPRS), to assist the relocation of 20,000 Syrian refugees into the UK by 2020 and you requested that Westminster City Council express an interest in resettling refugees in the borough.

In response, I can confirm that Westminster City Council have expressed their interest in the resettlement scheme, the Leader Nickie Aiken, Councillor’s Bott and Rigby have been very working closely alongside the Housing department over the last few months developing a proposal. This work is on-going, but please be assured that we are committed to offering assistance and implementing our proposal in the new year.

Please do get in touch with us if you have any further queries.

Yours faithfully

Gillian Matthews

More details from petition creator

In the light of The Vulnerable Person Resettlement Scheme (VPRS), a government initiative to relocate 20,000 Syrian refugees to the UK by 2020, we urge Westminster City Council to welcome 50 Syrians waiting in Refugee Camps to come and live in our borough.

Through this scheme, announced last year by David Cameron, Central Government funding is available. Our Council can work productively with refugee and asylum seekers’ groups and residents’ groups to welcome Syrian refugees. We petition the Council to express an interest to the Home Office in resettling 50 refugees here.
