We the undersigned petition Westminster City Council to Establish a permanent “School Street” timed road closure for Hampden Gurney CofE Primary outside both school entrances on Nutford Place and Forset Street. More details
Due to Covid, roads outside both Hampden Gurney’s entrances have been closed at pick and drop off since September 2020. The benefits are manifest: • No harmful vehicle emissions • No traffic danger to children • Encourages non-car travel to school • Space for social distancing
WCC contacted HG about continuing the School Street in March, and the school made it clear it had two entrances. The ETO for the School Street was due to be in place from 19th April 2021; this still has not happened.
The school understands the council’s intention is to provide a barrier at the Forset Street junction opposite the school, leaving the Nutford Place entrance unprotected. Opening Nutford Place will cause dangerous confusion for kids (some as young as 3) who are used to it being closed, and result in increased traffic and the associated air quality issues.
School Street closure times are minimal and during school term time weekdays only. They reduce children’s exposure to harmful gases and particulates and encourage active travel. This is an opportunity to Build Back Better!
